san mateo police have successfully detonated hazardous materials found inside a home. reggie kumar is live with the latest. what happened here? >> reporter: the san mateo county bomb squad found acid and explosives used by the military inside the garage of this home as well as ether. so these chemicals were dettated in the -- detonated in the front yard of the home. crews were called in to dispose of the chemicals located inside the garage. the bomb squad felt the chemicals were too dangerous to be moved and detonated at a different location. they dug a hole and placed sandbags around it. the home's windows were boarded up, but they still broke during the explosion. the homeowner who kept these chemicals inside his

garage were there for 30 years. the neighbor was a dentist and chemist. he has passed away. his widow did not want to speak with us on camera. 500 homes in the area were asked to shelter in place. we'll hear from the fire battalion chief. >> there was lots of chemicals that we were concerned with after talking to the sheriff's office. two we were told were something that needed to be taken care of on site. they couldn't transport it, very dangerous, the chance of explosion was real great. >> we heard the explosion, then you felt the shock. neighbor business next door across the street also could feel the percussion. >> reporter: as i mentioned, the windows on this home behind me were all shattered. that's why they are boarded up. no other homes were damaged during

the explosion. and no one was injured. sheriff's deputies in santa clara are still searching for the gunman who fired shots at a marine recruiter's car on highway 85 in cupertino today. you can see in the video courtesy of sky7 hd, the bullet holes left on the car. police shut down highway 85 for hours after the car driven by the marine was struck by the gun fire. these are additional pictures from sky7. the lanes backed up near coup tino. the re-- cupertino. the marine was not hurt. >> i'm driving on the highway with the music, and i heard boom, boom, boom! and it sounded like 5-7 shots. that's what i heard. then i didn't even bother to look, and i

stepped on the gas. >> that sound may have been those shots fired at the car on highway 85. you can see that investigators gather the evidence in the area for hours. the marine was in an unmarked government vehicle, but we are told he may have been followed from a gas station. we're going to need to look more closely at a culture that also often glorifies guns and violence. if there's one thing we should have after this week, it should be a sense of perspective about what's important. >> president obama's call to action following the deadly connecticut massacre. the president says this time washington will not just talk about tackling gun violence. he urged congress to vote early next year on an assault weapons ban, a ban on high-cast ammunition clips and to -- -- high-capacity ammunition clips,

will make very specific proposals once he gets the recommendations next month. on friday, the nra will hold its first news conference since the elementary school shooting. california has some of the toughest gun laws in the nation, but some state lawmakers are looking to make them even stronger. several lawmakers are saying it's time to put into place more restrictions on guns, specifically assaults weapons. >> we currently have a ban on assault weapon rifles in the state of california. the gun manufacturers have made modifications to those assault weapons whereby you can easily take a magazine out of those assault rifles, but by pushing a button, you can easily do that. >> he adds another state

senator is looking at a proposal that puts restrictions on ammunition. another day of heartbreaking goodbyes in newtown, connecticut. family and friends attended funerals for victoria soto, the hero 1st grade teacher who died protecting her students. services were held for three additional students. attendees were overwhelmed by the loss. >> i just can't imagine. i have a cart daughter the same age. [ crying ] >> just the face and the smile and the happiness he had. >> the connecticut post newspaper reports daniel wanted to be a fighter when he grew up. to honor him, the newspaper says that more than 100 firefighters from connecticut and from new york showed up for his funeral. we are already seeing

freezing and subfreezing temperatures around the bay area. it's freezing up in santa rosa, 41 degrees in fairfield, 39 in half moon bay, 33 in pleasanton. very cold conditions. you can see the clear skies over the bay area. some coverage is starting to filter into the north bay. that could keep temperatures from reaching the 20s in a couple locations. but very cold conditions overnight. 20s and 30s through much of the bay area. tomorrow, increasing clouds as that storm that you just saw approaches, and we'll have more rain in store for the weekend. the statuses of richmond -- citizens of richmond weigh in on plans to repair the chevron oil refinery. a san jose man was released from u.s. immigration and customs enforcement detention today. he was brought to the united states when he was four years old was doiped a request to join -- denied a request to join the u.s. marines because of his immigration status. he was deported to mexico, came back, and during reactions that included a rally, and a petition drive, he was set free. >> i just want to thank everybody that made it possible for me to get released. all the people that signed the petition, the people that attended the vigil. and everybody that made it possible for me to get released, i just want to thank everybody for that. this is not

richmond city officials have clayed repair work on --

delayed repair work on the richmond refinery damaged earlier this year. city residents were given a chance to weigh in on the repair process. charles clifford has details. >> reporter: inside richmond city hall wednesday, around 100 people attended an informational meeting to hear details about chevron plans to repair its damaged refinery. in order to fix the burned out crude unit, the company needs permits from the city. the city put the brakes on the process a few weeks ago. questions came up regarding chevron's choice of material, the use of chromium 9 in replacing a pipeline. city officials delayed approval in order to study the decision to use chrome 9. >> permits of the construction and use of a suitable pipe material are important. but on their own are inefficient in

terms of the regulatory process. there are many other steps that need to be taken. >> reporter: they say chromium 9 meets standards used throughout the refining industry. the public was given a chance to weigh in, but the approval of the permits will take place later. authorities say they found the wreckage of a plane in the mountains near phoenix, arizona, today. you can see the metal debris covered in snow as a corporate hovers overhead. officials do not know if this is the same small plane which went missing yesterday in the area. they found one body. google is selling a part of its motorola mobility division for $1.3 billion. it involves the division which cable tv boxes and other home entertainment equipment.

it's already at the freezing mark in a number of places around the bay area right now. colder temperatures overnight, dipping into the 20s in santa rosa, napa, 27 in fairfield, 30 in pleasanton, same thing in vallejo. a very cold night indeed. but we are going to start to see changes through the yes or no hours into tomorrow especially. a little cloud cover approaching the north bay, lots of it to the north as we look eight storm that's sitting off to the north. this is going to move slowly. throughout the day tomorrow, increasing clouds, then through the evening, rain will start in the north bay. the 3:00 hour, you see the clouds increasing over the north bay tomorrow, and at 8:00, the rain starts. midnight it's going to be concentrated mainly to the north. as we head into the overnight hour, it'll stay mainly to the north.

the 5:00 hour friday morning bringing us moderate rain through the north bay. moving ever so slowly to the south by 10:00, edging south of the golden gate. then more to the south, and we'll continue with a few showers into friday afternoon. rain starts tomorrow evening in the north bay, up to 2 inches expected up north. a wind advisory has been issued for the north bay, san mateo coastal and san francisco for gusts up to 54 miles an hour. this is the first of the systems moving in, going into friday. another round for sunday, but christmas will stay dry. about 5,000 bag was groceries were given away this morning in san francisco at glide memorial church.
